Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
