Man City 3-0 The Red Devils: Hemp finds the net in Manchester City dominant win.

Just as bad weather hit the north-west the prior day, the home side swept the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they reinforced their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Losses for United

This scoreline marked back-to-back league setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since last May, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations severely dented.

The Red Devils' capability to balance league and continental soccer with a limited squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed weary all game, the historic win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the on-form Malard to the bench was questioned.

The hosts, in opposition, have no such fitness issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since returning from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to build for Skinner and his side from the opening minute. This was a show of the power from City whose energetic forward line controlled and dismantled the opposition with a superb first half performance that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This left the home team completely dominant and had Manchester United struggling. Prior to this match, United had let in just few in this WSL season but they collapsed in the wake of City’s creative prowess.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came early when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Hemp was at the center of everything from the start, using the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her crosses were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had several sorties forwards, their straightforward approach giving them choices in the flanks but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, commanded possession, probing their opponents and trying to lure them of their structure.

Triple Strike

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the term.

They extended their lead with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was permitted to drive through the center from central defence, the field opened up for City. The prominent Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the right before delivering a precise low cross for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in possession saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to strike a effort home from range.

After the Break

The most obvious substitution came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to register a single shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to defeat any opponent who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to put them in a favorable situation after nine matches.
